Word BubbleWe’re down one chatter but taking up the time with some new features and a new interviewee. After spending a moment admiring Catherine’s new high-tech shower set-up, we meander our way into the topics for the week. Here’s your roadmap:

04:20 Topic 1: Kids and Money — A story about Nicole’s son’s internship in Japan leads into a discussion (started on Monday’s Speed Round) about young adults who don’t quite get that you can’t max out your credit cards, use up all your savings, run up an emergency-room bill, and not expect your Mom to freak the heck out. For younger kids, the dilemma is differentiating between needs, like underwear; wants, like underwear from Pink; and impossibilities, like buying an alpaca to live in your backyard. Though we don’t have all the answers, Catherine recommends the iAllowance app, Terri recommends iTunes allowances, and Nicole advocates for pay-as-you-go. (And back to young adults and budgeting, our faithful listener Mike has some good advice in his comment on this Facebook post.)

23:27 Friday Speed Round: Summer Food Pros and Cons — Since Amanda can no longer join us for our weekly group chats but will keep Speed Round-ing, we're going to do an extra Speed Round and drop it into these episodes. On today's, we talk about what summer foods we like and dislike, and how much less delicious everything is with bugs and sand in it. If after our conversation you’re dying to try Catherine's dicey-sounding salad, here's the recipe.

29:45 Parenting Roundabout Roundup — A new segment has us sharing things we’ve seen this week and loved, like a cool video on Paralympians titled “We’re the Superhumans”; Plant Nanny, an app to get us drinking more water; and Odd Mom Out, Nicole's new favorite TV show (with Hamilton cameos!).

36:41 Interview of the Week: Maureen Wallace — Maureen and Nicole chat about structuring summer and mommy guilt, because in the end, everything comes down to mommy guilt, right? Maureen will be joining us once a month, and in between you can find her on SheKnows.com, Twitter @ophaveitall, and Facebook.

52:54 Shameless Self-Promotion — Finally, we share what we’ve been up to that you might want to know about. The thing Terri mentioned is still in progress, but check this space; Nicole is excited about a webinar on tips and strategies on inclusive education scheduled for August 7; and Catherine has something you can actually look at now: a Verywell article on summer activities for bored kids.

Thanks as always to Jon Morin for producing our podcast and for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience.
